The Thing
Yep, it's CGI folks....
We bloody love The Thing - one of John Carpenter's best films, the feeling of desperation and isolation we get every time we hear the ominous "dum-dum......dum-dum....." soundtrack, the paranoia of the characters and the awesome practical effects work add up to one of our favourite films.
We've been struggling to work out what to make of the remake/prequel/reboot, and this latest red band trailer has us still debating with ourselves. CGI is heavily used, of course, but for the most part the effects look pretty cool, and we do suppose some concessions should be made to modern techniques and viewers. It's hard to get a handle on the overall tone of the film from this pretty action-packed trailer, but we're hoping the finished article is a hell of a lot slower and suspenseful.
If the original film didn't exist, we'd be all over this, starring two of our favourite actors in Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton, but the link to that sublime work from a horror master isn't doing it any favours. We'll just have to wait and see what they come up with when The Thing is released on October 14th.
