New Karate Kid Trailer Released
Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith star in the Beijing-set remake, which does not feature karate or car wax.
A new trailer for the Karate Kid remake has been released over at Yahoo! Pink Panther 2 and Agent Cody Banks director Harald Zwart has taken the classic 80s underdog film and made it about kung fu, but the name remains the same.
Our hero has been made pre-teen, with producers Will and Jada Pinkett's little one Jaden Smith as the bullied youngster coping with life in a new city, in this case Beijing. In the original, Ralph Macchio was driven by his love for Elisabeth Shue's cheerleader, and by the looks of it, they're even managing to squeeze a bit of romance in for Smith's Dre.
Jackie Chan steps into Pat Morita's inimitable shoes as the bad-ass caretaker who teaches the youth the ways of martial arts. This remake does well to avoid replicating the classic "wax on, wax off" scene, instead showing a less-than-snappy "jacket off, jacket on" moment which probably isn't going to go down as well in pop culture. The nod to catching the fly in chopsticks is also a tad forced. See for yourself on 16th July.
