Battleship Trailer

See Liam Neeson take on E.Ts in this bizarre adaptation

The much-mocked Battleship movie now has a trailer, which you can enjoy below. Playing like a balls-out CGI-fest, it's one of the more bizarre promos of this year...

The film stars Taylor Kitsch as a Navy hotshot, who is engaged to Brooklyn Decker - the daughter of an Admiral played by Liam Neeson. Other cast members are Alexander Skarsgard and the potential new Rosie Huntingdon-Whitely, Rihanna. Directed by Peter Berg, or Friday Night Lights fame, it depicts an alien invasion which the U.S Navy are dispatched to resist.

So the trailer, then... We are shown a lot of shots of boring family drama, which is obviously just a precursor to the main event: the battles. These are CGI-heavy, as expected, and display shocking disregard for the laws of physics as Kitsch's small three-man launch bobs happily alongside a thrashing, town-sized vessel as it splashes down. Our cynicism is somewhat dispelled with an amusing overhead shot of the battle, and a knowing effect where the alien ship appears to be launching pegs into the naval fleet. These sort of tenuous links to the board game may or may not be intentionally humourous, but the signs are that this film does not take itself too seriously. Eerily reminiscent of the trailers for Skyline and Battle: LA, this at least appears to have the good sense to unashamedly nail it's silly, fun tone to the post from the off, unlike those two poor efforts.

Set for an April 20th release, Battleship will hopefully not be the impending disaster we all assumed it will be.
