Zhang Ziyi Is Mulan
The Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star takes on the title role in Jan De Bont's adaptation.
Zhang Ziyi has been announced as the star in a new adaptation of Mulan.
Speed and Twister director Jan De Bont is tackling the Chinese legend of a woman who joins an all-male army, which we've seen immortalised in Disney's animation of the same name.
Ziyi shot to fame in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon before roles in Memoirs of a Geisha, Hero and Horsemen. The independent Chinese/English production has a script by John Blickstead, and it's the first project for De Bont since 2003's Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.
Producer Ying Ye told The Hollywood Reporter: "This is the first independent film directed by Jan de Bont, whose worldwide box office track record is huge." Production gets underway at China's Hengdian World Studios soon.
