Wicked Coming To Big Screen
JJ Abrams, James Mangold, Ryan Murphy, and Rob Marshall are the directors approached to adapt the musical.
The hugely successful musical Wicked is on its way to cinemas, Deadline are reporting.
The musical's producer Marc Platt, songwriter Stephen Schwartz, and libretto writer Winnie Holzman have begun meetings with directors for the film adaptation, and the names being bandied around are pretty impressive - and surprising.
Starting with the not-shocking: Glee director Ryan Murphy, and Nine and Chicago helmer Rob Marshall. Not-so-obvious: Walk the Line and Knight and Day's James Mangold. Total surprise: Lost, Alias and Fringe creator, and director of Star Trek, J.J. Abrams.
Universal aren't put off by the fact there are several Wizard Of Oz projects currently in pre-production: Robert Downey Jr is set to star in Oz, the Great and Powerful; Drew Barrymore's sequel, Surrender Dorothy; the remake Oz: the Polish brothers' prequel Oz, and several others. Jeez, give it a rest, Hollywood!
Wicked, based on the Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, focuses on the early relationship between Glinda the Good and green-skinned Elphaba, before she took to her broomstick. It was originally conceived as a film, before ending up as a stage production.
