The Week In Geek: Rambo 5, Blade Runner 2, Hammer Projects.
Plenty to keep us occupied this week as legendary studio lines up some cool projects.
Lots of geek-friendly news to report this week, kicking off with the exciting news that one of the 80’s action icons we grew up with may not be finished after all. Speaking via Twitter, screenwriter Sean Hood has commented on the possibility of Rambo 5 still happening, saying that the project is “on hold” while Sylvester Stallone is finishing off The Expendables 2. Stating that he hasn’t decided whether the film will be an “Unforgiven” or a “Passing of the torch”, our thoughts turn to the latter scenario, and who could take the series forward, given how iconic the image of Sly in his red bandana is. Naturally, we instantly thought of Jason Statham, given his action credentials and working relationship with the Rocky star, but should stress that this is purely speculation on our part.
We got ourselves worked into a frenzy with the news that Machete Kills is set to shoot this April. We loved the first Machete film, and with the release of the below teaser poster, cannot wait to see the mighty Danny Trejo back in action.

The rumour mill moved at an incredible speed this week, with reports coming in on Monday that Harrison Ford was in talks to return in Ridley Scott’s planned Blade Runner sequel. We found this very hard to believe, given that Ford has never exactly professed his love for the science fiction classic, and when the producers moved to scotch the rumours the very next day, we can’t say we were surprised. Speaking to Deadline, an Alcon rep said; “It is absolutely patently false that there has been any discussion about Harrison Ford being in Blade Runner...To be clear, what we are trying to do with Ridley now is go through the painstaking process of trying to break the back of the story, figure out the direction we’re going to take the movie and find a writer to work on it. The casting of the movie could not be further from our minds at this moment.” Sounds pretty firm to us. More on this project as we get it.
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 3D was released this week, and despite the fact that the film is still probably the weakest of the six, we can say that we are pleased that a new generation of young fans can discover Star Wars on the big screen as the movies are released annually. OK, Phantom Menace isn’t exactly the best entry point to the series, but we are still looking forward to seeing the opening crawls of the original trilogy in cinemas once more. Fans at the advance screening on Wednesday night were treated to a Stormtrooper appearance, resulting in some of our favourite publicity shots ever.

Anyone who read our review of The Woman in Black earlier this week will know that we weren’t fans. Although it did a lot of things right, it was a pretty workmanlike ghost story which just felt like a box-ticking exercise for the most part. The good news, however, is that it has kicked Hammer into life, with the legendary studio picking up some exciting future projects. Gaslight is the first, with a cool concept involving an incarcerated Jack the Ripper being called in to do the Lecter work on a confounding series of murder cases, in which each victim bears a set of puncture marks to the neck. The second project is The Quiet Ones, set to shoot this summer, with a professor enlisting his students to help his create a poltergeist. The experiment naturally goes awry, and we can expect big scares. Bloody Disgusting report the possible involvement of Michael Sheen in this one. With The Woman in Black making a killing in the US, and set to do well over here, it’s great to see Hammer back on track.
