The Week In Geek: Dark Knight Rises, Star Trek 2 and American Psycho
Our weekly take on the biggest happenings in the land of geek.
OK, let’s get the bad news out of the way first. Lionsgate have decided that what the world really needs is a new, updated version of the 2000 film adaptation of American Psycho, starring a fantastic Christian Bale as the murderous yuppie. We really don’t know what they’re thinking here, but the plan is to transplant the story from its 80’s setting to a modern day New York, presumably to try and be relevant. When will all this end? It’s almost understandable to be remaking foreign language films from recent years (Oldboy, although we still don’t approve), but to remake a US production which is only 11 years old? Even The Mila Kunis-starring American Psycho 2: All American Girl wasn’t this upsetting.
Star Trek 2’s villain has been revealed as Khan Noonien Singh, the genetically-engineered human who served as a wonderful nemesis to Kirk in Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. The iconic image of William Shatner giving it some serious welly with his anguished, furious yell of “KHAAAAAAAAAN!” is unlikely to be replicated too closely, but we do hope for at least some small reference. Benecio Del Toro has passed on the part, so we will eagerly await the news of who JJ Abrams beams in as a replacement.

The next two sequels in the Transformers franchise may not be cured of their Michael Bay affliction, it seems. The director had previously said he would not be signing on for any more films in the series, but according to reports he is close to a deal for both Transformers 4 and 5. Bay’s last two efforts have had us ranting and raving as he merrily went about trashing our childhood memories of the giant robots, and this is certainly unwelcome news. That said, we are expecting a new cast, which could improve things, and as long as he doesn’t bastardise our beloved Dinobots in this one, we’ll at least give it half a chance.
The Upcoming adaptation of Ender’s Game has added another impressive name to its cast list, with the awesome Ben Kingsley signing on to play war hero Mazer Rackham, the iconic soldier who is famous for having repelled the film’s hostile aliens years before. Harrison Ford is yet to be locked in as Colonel Hyrum Graff, the young trainee’s instructor, but a deal is thought to be close. Many have suggested these parts would be better reversed, but Ford can bring charisma to any role, and Kingsley is not short of range, so we’ll reserve judgement on this one for now.

We are total suckers for viral marketing. Before Cloverfield came out, we were going absolutely rabid for any slight piece of information we could find, and so we are getting very excited for The Dark Knight Rises. A mysterious countdown here is ticking down in relation to something called “Operation Early Bird”, which seems to involve an extraction mission for a scientist. Total Film have gathered all the latest on this in one handy place, and we can’t wait to see what happens when the clock reaches zero.
