It's all gone a bit comic book crazy this week, here's the latest.

The Week In Geek: Avengers, The Crow, Terminator 5

This week’s biggest stories in the geek world have a distinctive comic-book flavour, with updates on a number of the big-name adaptations currently in the works.

The first, and probably least warmly-welcomed item on the agenda is the settling of the long-running lawsuit between Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company over the rights to The Crow. The world is pretty much united in not wanting the new version of the beloved tale to be made, so when a new director and writer were announced the following day, there was a collective groan. Before the Fall’s F Javier Gutierrez is taking over the megaphone, with relatively unknown scribe taking another crack at the script. Head over to Deadline and Showblitz for more on the Crow.

VERY SLIGHT RISK OF AVENGERS SPOILER ALERT. Our ears pricked up this week when geek icon Jenny Agutter, of An American Werewolf in London and Logan’s Run fame, spilled the beans on a potential spoiler for The Avengers. In an interview with the Radio Times, she revealed that there were huge Winnebagos on set, one for Iron Man and one for Spiderman. However, she also said that she hadn’t been allowed a script until arriving on set, and we suspect that she may have her heroes mixed up here. If she’s correct, that would be one hell of a cameo, but since Sony have the rights to Spiderman locked up tighter than a lycra bodysuit, we doubt the accuracy here.

The Oscar nominations were announced this week, giving everybody even remotely connected to the film world an opportunity to have a good old bitch about the selections. To give our two cents, we really don’t understand why Spain didn’t even put The Skin I Live In for the Best Foreign Language category. They may be comfortably the best footballing nation in the world, but we can’t help but think a trick has been missed here by out Iberian friends. Tilda Swinton has been bizarrely overlooked for We Need to Talk about Kevin, and Albert Brooks missing out for Best Supposrting Actor in Drive is pretty shameful, but the two outright snubs that have really upset us are Michael Shannon missing out for a powerhouse performance in Take Shelter, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’s omission from the Soundtrack category. We’ll be bringing you the Oscars news as it happens, but needless to say we expect a lot of disappointment this year.

Some welcome news from the planned Terminator 5 project now, as financier Megan Ellison has tweeted to scotch rumours of a PG-13 instalment in the franchise, promising us an R rated movie to carry on the story. This is great news, as the Terminator films should always carry the darkness that comes with the subject matter. Of course this won’t make or break the film, but knowing that we won’t be treated to another watered-down entry is a relief. Take that, Chuck Norris!

The wave of Marvel adaptations is set to continue for some time, and with this week’s news that Iron Man 3 could start shooting in April, we look forward to spending some more time in the company of Tony Stark and co. That’s not all either, as Thor 2 is also set to shoot this summer, having finally settled down after a turbulent few months. Surely there can be no more, you say, but we are happy to report that Captain America 2 is set to go in front of cameras this winter. The coolest news to come out of this huge Marvel-gasm is the planned Nick Fury movie – Empire reveal the early details of the 70’s set Samuel L Jackson fest. Sounds amazing.
