Star Trek 2 Villain Is Benedict Cumberbatch

JJ Abrams’ Star Trek 2 has added two new cast members, with Benedict Cumberbatch signing on to fill the villain role passed on by Benecio Del Toro late last year, reports THR.

Riding high after roles in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, War Horse and Danny Boyle’s stage version of Frankenstein, Cumberbatch looks set to have a big year of villainy ahead of him, as he is also set to appear as Dragon Smaug in The Hobbit in December 2012.

Also joining the crew is fellow Brit Noel Clarke. Rising to prominence after his role in the BBC’s Doctor Who as assistant Mickey, Clarke has been steadily building a profile for himself, having written and directed 4.3.2.1.

The pair will be joined by returning cast members Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, and Zachary Quinto, as well as new additions Alice Eve and Peter Weller. The sequel is set to blast off on May 17th, 2013.
