Ridley Scott Confirms New Blade Runner Project
Original director signs on to new installment
Deadline have reported that Ridley Scott, the esteemed director of legendary sci-fi Blade Runner, has signed on to make a second installment of the replicant-hunting story.
The original film is set in Los Angeles of 2019, when a batch of "Replicants" - synthetic humans - are on the loose, and a weary "Blade Runner", played by Harrison Ford, dispatched to hunt them down. It is based on Phillip K Dick's sci-fi novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?, and we wonder whether this new feature will draw inspiration from the same source material.
It is unclear at this stage what Scott's involvement will be exactly, or whether we can look forward to a remake, sequel, or indeed prequel. The news does echo Scott's current project Prometheus, the not-quite prequel to Alien which he is overseeing. Harrison Ford has not been confirmed at this stage, and it remains to be seen whether or not the star of the 1982 original will be reprising his role as detective Rick Deckard.
Although this is breaking news, and nothing has been confirmed - the script has not even been written yet - we aren't sure how to approach this one. Blade Runner is one of those genre films which is so seminal as to be untouchable, although we are pleased that if anyone is handed it to tackle again, it is the man behind the original.
