Paco Plaza Talks [Rec] 4: Apocalypse

With Paco Plaza’s [Rec] 3: Genesis set to play at FrightFest at the end of next month, the director has revealed the first details of the sequel, [Rec] 4: Apocalypse. Directed by Plaza’s co-director from the first two films, Jaume Balaguero, fans of the series will be interested to hear that the found-footage presentation is to be ditched altogether, and that the film will run parallel to the events of the third.

Plaza told Bloody Disgusting, “It’s true that it takes place after ‘[REC] 2′. And it is going to be shot [differently]. It is not going back to found footage, it is going to be a cinematic narrative. A conventional film. I don’t want to say much more, I can’t say too much. I don’t want to get in trouble!”

Despite Rec 3 moving away from the format that the first two films took, Plaza is also quick to point out that this is not a rejection of the sub-genre. “It’s not that I wanted to make a statement. There are still excellent found footage films like ‘Paranormal Activity 3′. It’s not saying ‘found footage is over’ or anything. I just wanted to surprise the audience and deliver something different.”

We’re keen to see what Balaguero has come up with for the next instalment, and our full review of Genesis will follow after its FrightFest premiere.
