Monsters Sequel Gets New Writer And Director
Sequel gearing up, will be called Monsters: Dark Continent.
2010’s Monsters was a low budget, partly improvised project from British writer/director Gareth Edwards, which pushed the filmmaker into the limelight. Chronicling the journey of two people across a stretch of Mexico inhabited by towering aliens, the film drew plaudits both for its character led narrative and stunning home-made special effects work.
Now the sequel is gearing up, and we are told via Bleeding Cool that it is to be titled Monsters: Dark Continent, and will be directed by Tom Green (Misfits) from a script by Jay Basu (Fast Girls). With Edwards looking to get stuck in to the planned Godzilla reboot, there are currently few details on what the new personnel will do with the second film.
For our two cents, we thought Monsters worked neatly as a self-contained narrative, and that a sequel is pretty unnecessary – of course we would like to see more of the imaginative design and ground-level stylings of the first film, but we just hope that the new folks running the show don’t tinker too much with a winning formula. At the same time, attempting to capture what made Monsters special would be a little like trying to bottle lightning twice, so it will be interesting to see how this one develops.
