Joel Kinnaman Is The New Robocop
The Killing star to take up the role of the cyborg law enforcer.
Director Jose Padhila’s planned Robocop remake finally has its lead after months of being loosely linked to some big-name talent such as Michael Fassbender and Russell Crowe, and the man to step into the role of Alex Murphy is set to be The Killing star Joel Kinnaman.
The Swedish born actor has locked in a deal with MGM, according to Deadline, following his run in the crime drama, and has also been seen in a brief but exciting appearance in Safe House, opposite Ryan Reynolds. His previous credit on Safe House director Daniel Espinosa’s previous film, Snabba Cash, is set to be brought to a wider audience when the film is released internationally this summer.
The remake has a lot to live up to, with Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original one of the most sharply satirical and well-aged of the 80’s run of genre icons. We aren’t as down on this remake as we usually would be though, due to the personnel involved – Padhila’s previous work on the Elite Squad films is superb, and the director’s flair for social comment melded with action could make him the right man to continue the franchise.
