JJ Abrams has picked up the rights to graphic novel Boilerplate, with a view to producing the robot drama.

The producer, writer and director is currently working on Super 8, his sci-fi collaboration with Steven Spielberg, and has already lined up his next potential project.

Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel was created by Paul Guinan, and tells a tale of the world's first robot, which joined Lawrence of Arabia on his adventures, travelled to the South Pole, started out in the early film industry and vanished during World War One.

After creating Lost, Alias and Fringe, Abrams made his big screen directorial debut with Mission: Impossible III, before the massively successful Star Trek. Super 8 is released next summer.
