JJ Abrams Gets Writer For True Heist Story

Just because typing JJ Abrams' name makes me fall all warm and fuzzy, the news is he has locked down a writer for his true-life heist flick.

Under his Bad Robot production company, Abrams secured the rights to an article Joshua Davis wrote for Wired, entitled The Untold Story Of The World’s Biggest Diamond Heist. In 2003 a gang of Italian thieves manage to do the impossible - break into Antwerp's Diamond Centre to steal $100 million's worth of valuables. As the article claims: "10 layers of security, including infrared heat detectors, Doppler radar, a magnetic field, a seismic sensor, and a lock with 100 million possible combinations."

The ringleader, Leonardo Notarbartolo, didn't reveal the extraordinary methods he used to carry out the raid until Davis tracked him down to his Belgian prison cell.

Now, it is a little disturbing that Davis bought the criminal's life rights, and that a subsequent film will mean more dosh for this audacious thief (the loot was never found). It has fallen to The Sum Of All Fears and Sneakers writer and director Phil Alden Robinson to tackle the incredible story for Abrams. There is no word on whether Robinson will also direct.
