George Lucas To Retire?
Director says he is tired of blockbuster filmmaking, rules out more Star Wars.
In an interview with the New York Times, the father of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, George Lucas has stated that he is ready to hang up his camera. “I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff.” Says Lucas, citing the difficulty he had in getting Red Tails (directed by Anthony Hemingway) made as a cause for particular frustration.
Red Tails is set to be his last "big" film, after he had to self-finance the project, and has said that any future projects will be smaller, more personal films. Lucas has said that an exception may be made for any future Indiana Jones movies, but that apart from that he seems to be done with the world of studio bigwigs.
This would also mean no more Star Wars movies, which depending on how you view the second trilogy could be seen as a good thing. Lucas has also lamented the fan reaction to his continued tinkering with his trademark series. “Why would I make any more, when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?” Perhaps this will mean the classic trilogy will be left alone once and for all, but time will tell on this one.
How this affects the planned TV show, detailed by Rick McCallum recently, remains to be seen, but we can't imagine Lucas would not have some kind of involvement.
