Could Spider-Man Join The Avengers?
Faint glimmer of hope for fans as producer isn't ruling anything out.
With Sony owning the rights to Spider-Man, fans had pretty much given up home of the web-slinging superhero joining Marvel’s ensemble mega-hit The Avengers. However, there may just be a tiny glimmer of hope for future sequels, as revealed by producer Avi Arad at a recent press junket.
“Everything is possible,” said Arad when asked about the possibility. “If something like that happens, it’s great for Disney, it’s great for Sony. If the right story comes in, we are now working on Venom first. It’s our first out. So our thinking is in the right direction. Avengers to me was an expected success so I never looked at it because Avengers was successful.”
We should stress that this is a very faint glimmer, as the contractual issues would surely be sticky. We would imagine that Sony would want a hefty wedge of the profits for loaning out their character, and this could lead to difficulties with the film itself – the company are presumably not going to be keen on farming out one of their properties for a mere team-member role.
Also talking about the upcoming Venom film, which has been linked to Chronicle director Josh Trank, Arad said “The truth is he also deserves his own movie,” Tolmach said. “We’ve been sitting around in a room talking about Venom stories and it’s a really full bodied complicated character, Eddie Brock and this character. Maybe people feel there wasn’t enough of a chance to unravel it, but we’re all in on him.” When pressed on whether Venom could encounter Andrew Garfield’s Spidey in a later film, a coy “All things are possible someday.” was offered in response.
It’s all speculation of course, but the thought that Spider-man could conceivably pop up in future Avengers flicks is an exciting one indeed.
