Christopher Nolan’s 3D Reluctance
The director did tests on Inception, but doesn't enjoy it as a viewer.
Christopher Nolan has made his views clear on the current 3D craze.
Now the blasted gimmick looks set to stay, the British director spoke at this weekend's LA Times' Hero Complex Festival about his own experiences both working with and viewing 3D movies. Sci Fi Wire quote Nolan remarking "...one of the reasons why I'm a little reluctant about 3-D at the moment because I find it as a viewer impossible to forget that I'm watching a film".
Continuing, the director of The Dark Knight and Memento says: "The truth is, I think it's a misnomer to call it 3-D vs. 2-D. The whole point of cinematic imagery is that it is work in three dimensions. 95% of our depth cues come from a collusion of resolution, color and so forth. So the idea of calling a 2-D movie a 2-D movie is a little misleading."
However, Nolan did admit to doing 3D conversion tests on Inception, and wouldn't rule it out in the future. "We did tests on Inception to look at the post conversion process," he explained. "It worked very well. It's quite easy to do in fact, but it takes a little time. We didn't have time to do it to the standard I would have been happy with. Post conversion technology I think probably for me would definitely be the future, but really it's going to be up to audiences to decide how they watch their films. But I'm certainly quite pleased with Inception that we're able to present it really bright and really clear [Nolan previously commented on how 3D compromises on brightness]. As the technology improves, those differences may change and that's what I would hope for but really it'll be up to audiences."
These comments follow a recent Inception featurette, where the director spoke about his commitment to filming in difficult, but real, locations. Watch it below! Sci-fi thriller Inception is released on 16th July, and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page.
