Catching Fire Adds Jena Malone
Donnie Darko star will play Johanna Mason in second Hunger Games film.
With the second film in the Lionsgate’s mega-franchise The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, set to officially begin production in the next few weeks, we have another piece of solid casting news this morning, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter.
The role of Johanna Mason has had a number of names attached, with Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska being strongly linked, before the producers have apparently plumped for Donnie Darko and Sucker Punch star Jena Malone.
For those not familiar with the story of the second book (SPOILERS AHEAD), Johanna is one of a group of former winners of the hunger games, having successfully represented District 7 several years previous to the plot. With the Capitol reeling from Katniss and Peeta’s very public act of defiance in the first edition, they cruelly recall these champions, to compete in a kind of “all-star” event. Johanna is a quick and intelligent competitor, and one of the most deceptively dangerous in the arena. (END SPOILERS)
Malone reportedly beat out former model Zoe Aggiliki (soon to appear in R.I.P.D) for the role. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is set for release on November 22nd 2013.
