New RPG Trailers - FFXIII-2, Mass Effect 3, I Am Alive
What better way to pass 50 hours or so than with one of these epic-looking RPG's, due out in 2012?
We here at ScreenGeek are fairly obsessive when it comes to games, and what better way to pass 50 hours or so than with one of these epic-looking RPG's, due out in 2012?
Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition may simultaneously be the best and worst news we've heard all week. The best, because the most recent instalment of the post-apocalyptic epic was a deep, involving, life-absorbing experience, but the worst because an unnamed member of the ScreenGeek staff (Ahem) lost a mammoth 100 hours plus last year to the original game - without the add-ons!
Featuring the DLC of Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, Dead Money and Lonesome Road, as well as the couriers' stash and Gun Runners' Arsenal content, this edition will chew up most of 2012 for us. Fallout fans can treat themselves to the trailer below, and smile at the familiar sights of EDE-E, feral ghouls, and the NCR rangers, before getting a shiver down the spine as Ron Perlman delivers his trademark Fallout line.
Released 10th February.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 also has a new promo vid, which shows off some of the new gameplay elements present in Square Enix's hotly anticipated sequel. Final Fantasy 13 may not have been the best entry in an impeccable series (Please just let us go to a shop and but potions!), but it was still a damn fine game, with spectacular visuals and an innovative combat system giving players plenty to get their teeth into.
The new time travel mechanic seems to address the common concern amongst series fans that the 13th game in the main series didn't allow the sort of freedom of expoloration the genre offers up almost as standard. The trailer below details the new system, and has us keen to return to the world of Lightning and friends.
Released on 3rd February.
The latest technological developments to the world of Mass Effect 3 are outlined in the below demo, featuring the game's new Kinect interface. Whilst the threequel to the enormous sci-fi RPG has drawn some criticism for including a seemingly shoehorned-in multiplayer mode in what is traditionally a solitary experience, this does look pretty cool.
Questions do remain over how well this will implement in the long run, but there is no denying that the use of Kinect tech here is impressive. The voice command system lends itself perfectly to the squad-based elements, for example, but we can't help but notice the slight delay in ordering Shepard to pull out a shotgun and him actually unholstering the weapon. Is it really better than a button push? That sort of delay could easily lead to a "game over" screen, and we hope that this works better when running in real time.
Released 9th March.
We are rarely as intrigued by a game as much as we are about I Am Alive, the upcoming survival game from Ubisoft. Having been in development hell since 2008, the game is described as a realistic take on virtual survival.
The game sees the protagonist separated from his family by a terrible disaster which has laid waste to the earth. Having been across the country at the time of the disaster, he travels home to attempt to reach his loved ones. The game picks up a year later, as he arrives in his city only to find it a derelict wasteland. Players must manage their resources (including precious bullets) as they attempt to pick their way across the dangerous rubble, evading hostile survivors and precipitous drops. This looks to be a very human sort of horror, without a zombie in sight. If Cormac McCarthy's The Road was ever made into a videogame, this is it. Check out the video below for a fascinating look at the game's unique combat mechanics.
Set for release in the first quarter of 2012.
